Wisdom In Community
"Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety." - Proverbs 11:14
One of the most dangerous myths in our culture is the idea that we can figure everything out on our own. This verse reminds us that isolation leads to failure, while seeking counsel from multiple wise sources provides safety and direction. True wisdom recognizes its own limitations and actively seeks input from others.
The Hebrew word for "guidance" can also be translated as "steering" or "direction," like the guidance system of a ship. Without proper navigation, even the strongest ship will eventually crash into rocks or run aground. Similarly, without wise counsel, even talented and well-intentioned people will make decisions that lead to harm.
Notice that the verse mentions "an abundance of counselors." This doesn't mean we should ask everyone for advice, but rather that we should seek input from multiple people who demonstrate godly wisdom. Different counselors bring different perspectives, experiences, and insights that help us see situations more clearly.
In the context of stewardship and purpose, this principle is crucial. God has given each of us unique gifts, opportunities, and responsibilities, but He never intended for us to steward them in isolation. We need mentors who have walked similar paths, peers who can offer fresh perspectives, and even younger voices that can challenge our assumptions.
For students heading back to school, this means building relationships with teachers, coaches, and older students who can provide guidance. For parents, it means connecting with other parents and seeking wisdom from those who have successfully raised children. For everyone, it means being part of a church community where we can both give and receive counsel.
The safety that comes from multiple counselors isn't just about avoiding mistakes. It's also about having the confidence to take wise risks and pursue the purposes God has for us. When we know we have a community of wise people supporting and advising us, we can step forward with greater boldness and clarity.
