What The Hard Season Is Building
“And not only that, but we also boast in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope.” — Romans 5:3-4 (CSB)
Nobody wakes up on a Monday morning and prays for something hard to happen. I've never once heard a person say, "Lord, would You send me a crisis this week so I can grow?" That's not how any of us are wired. Suffering shows up uninvited, usually at the worst possible time, and it always asks the same question: what do you actually believe?
Paul's answer here is almost offensive on first read. He says we boast in our afflictions. Not that we enjoy them. Not that we pretend they don't hurt. He's saying there's a reason to hold your head up in the middle of one, and then he tells us why.
He traces a chain. Affliction produces endurance. Endurance produces proven character. Proven character produces hope. Every link is real, and none of them can be skipped.
Think about anyone who's ever gotten in shape. Muscle doesn't grow from rest. It grows from resistance. The load has to be heavy enough to break something down before anything stronger gets built. You can read about it, watch videos about it, and buy the gear for it, but until you pick up something heavy, nothing changes.
Faith works the same way. Every time you choose to trust God in a hard season instead of walking away from Him, something in you gets stronger. Your character gets tested and comes back proven. And a hope that's been proven isn't fragile. It isn't theoretical. It's the kind of hope you can put weight on, because you already have.
Here's what that means for your Tuesday. Perseverance isn't just something that happens to you. It's something you practice. Every hard day you walk through with your hand in God's hand is building something nobody can take from you.
Name the trial you're in right now. Then ask a harder question: what if God isn't just getting you through it, but building something in you with it? You can treat this season as a dead end, or you can treat it as construction. Only one of those produces hope.
Prayer
Almighty God, I won't pretend this season is easy, and I won't pretend I understand it. But I choose to believe You don't waste anything. Give me the endurance to keep going when quitting would be simpler. Build proven character in me. And when this is behind me, let me look back and find that You were working the whole time. In Jesus' name, Amen.
