WEATHERING THE STORM IN YOUR MARRIAGE

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall because it had its foundation on the rock.” – Matthew 7:24-25

Ever had that heart-pounding moment when the phone rings in the middle of the night, and a panicked voice on the other end says, “The storm is coming”? I’ll never forget our experience a few months after moving to Tennessee.

My buddy Jeff called, with urgency in his voice, telling me to seek shelter immediately because a tornado was headed our way. Now, I’ll admit, I didn’t take it as seriously as I should have. Living in a place where school gets canceled for rain, I thought, “How bad could it be?”

Then Jeff dropped the truth bomb saying, “There’s a tornado coming directly at your house. You need to get underground and prepare for the storm.” That changed everything. We grabbed the kids, my wife rounded up the dogs and some water, and we hunkered down. Luckily, we didn’t take a direct hit, but some weren’t as fortunate.

Now, let me throw a different storm your way – the storms of life hitting your marriage. Whether they’re spiritual, physical, relational, financial, emotional, or health-related, storms will find their way to your house eventually.

You might say, “My marriage is just fine.” That’s fantastic. But here’s the deal – marriages may look strong in fair weather, but what about when the storm clouds gather?
Is your marriage ready for the storm?

Jesus shared a wise lesson in Matthew 7:24-25. He talked about building your house on a rock, making it strong enough to withstand the rain, rising streams, and fierce winds. That’s the kind of foundation your marriage needs.

As you enjoy the sunny days of your relationship, ask yourself: Is your marriage prepared to survive the storm? Are you building it on a foundation that can weather the challenges life throws your way?

Let’s be real. Storms are inevitable. The question is, are you ready?
