SUBMISSION IN MARRIAGE
"Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord, because the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of the body.” – Ephesians 5:22-23
Today’s key passage of Scripture addresses a sensitive topic – the concept of submission in marriage. This passage can be challenging to understand in today’s cultural context, but when viewed through the lens of Christ’s love for His church, it unveils a beautiful picture of sacrificial leadership and mutual respect.
Submission is not about inferiority or domination; it is about recognizing God-ordained roles within the marital relationship. Just as Christ lovingly leads and serves the church, husbands are called to lead their wives with sacrificial love, humility, and selflessness.
As wives submit to their husbands, they do so not out of blind obedience but in response to Christ’s example of submission to the Father’s will. It is an act of trust in both God’s design for marriage and in their husbands’ commitment to love and cherish them as Christ does the church.
Submission in marriage also reflects the harmonious relationship between Christ and the church. Just as Christ is the head of the church, providing guidance, protection, and nourishment, husbands are called to be spiritual leaders, creating an environment where their wives can thrive and grow in their faith.
It is crucial to remember that mutual submission is a two-way street in marriage. Ephesians 5:21 sets the tone: “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” This verse calls both husband and wife to humble themselves and prioritize the other’s needs and well-being.
As believers, we are called to submit to Christ’s lordship in every aspect of our lives. This includes our marriages. When husbands and wives submit to Christ first, they can submit to each other with love and respect, fostering an environment of trust, intimacy, and spiritual growth.
Ultimately, the foundation of a Christ-centered marriage is sacrificial love. Husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church, even to the point of giving His life for her (Ephesians 5:25). Wives are to honor and support their husbands, just as the church honors Christ’s leadership.
