Wake Up

“I know your works; you have a reputation for being alive, but you are dead. Be alert and strengthen what remains, which is about to die, for I have not found your works complete before my God. Remember, then, what you have received and heard; keep it, and repent. If you are not alert, I will come like a thief, and you have no idea at what hour I will come upon you.” - Revelation 3:1-3

Jesus’ message to the church at Sardis is a powerful wake-up call. Despite their reputation for being vibrant and active, Jesus saw through the facade. He declared them spiritually dead. His command to them was simple: Wake up!

It’s easy to fall into routines and maintain a facade of spiritual vitality, but Jesus sees the truth. He challenges you to stop playing church, to stop going through the motions, and to wake up to the reality of your spiritual condition. Reflect on areas where you’ve become complacent or where your faith has become a series of habits rather than a living, dynamic relationship with Christ.

Jesus also calls you to strengthen what remains and is about to die. There may be aspects of your faith that are still alive but need to be revived. Perhaps you have a flicker of passion that needs to be fanned into flame or a small spark of love that needs to be nurtured and grown. Strengthen these areas through prayer, scripture, and active engagement with God’s work.

Remember what you have received and heard. Recall the moments when your faith was strong, when your heart burned with love for God and others. Keep those memories close and let them inspire you to return to your first love. Repent of any complacency or self-reliance and ask God to renew your heart and mind.

Are you merely going through the motions of faith? Do you find yourself relying on your own efforts and energy instead of being fueled by the Spirit of God? Jesus calls you to be alert to the state of your heart. Have you lost your passion, your drive, your love for Him and His mission?

Jesus warns that if you are not alert, He will come like a thief, and you won’t know when He will arrive. This speaks to the urgency of waking up and being vigilant in your faith. Don’t wait for tomorrow to rekindle your passion for Christ. Take action today.
