PRIDE’S BARRIER IN RELATIONSHIPS

August 5, 2023

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” – Philippians 2:3

Pride is a formidable obstacle that hinders our relationships with others. It stands as a barrier between genuine connection, empathy, and the ability to love selflessly. The verse from Philippians 2:3 encourages us to set aside selfish ambition and conceit, choosing humility and valuing others above ourselves.

Pride fosters an attitude of superiority, where we believe we are better or more important than those around us. It causes us to view others through a lens of judgment and comparison, instead of recognizing their inherent worth and unique contributions. This self-centered perspective prevents us from truly seeing and understanding the needs, struggles, and joys of those we interact with.

When pride takes root, it hampers our ability to listen and empathize. Instead of genuinely seeking to understand others, we are preoccupied with our own opinions, desires, and agendas. Pride fuels a mindset that prioritizes our own voice and dismisses or belittles the perspectives and experiences of others. Consequently, our relationships suffer from a lack of open communication and mutual respect.

What pride does is hinder us from forgiveness and reconciliation. It engenders a stubbornness that prevents us from admitting our mistakes or extending grace to those who have wronged us. Pride convinces us that we are entitled to hold grudges and fuels a desire for retaliation rather than seeking resolution and healing. As a result, bitterness and division poison our relationships, preventing the restoration and growth that comes from genuine reconciliation.

To overcome the destructive power of pride, we are called to embrace humility. Humility invites us to lay down our own agendas, egos, and self-interest for the sake of others. It opens the door to deep connections, compassion, and the building of healthy relationships.

Strive to value others above ourselves, listening with intent, speaking words of encouragement, and extending forgiveness readily. As we choose humility, we create an environment of acceptance, love, and unity in our relationships. We reflect the heart of Christ, who humbled Himself and served others sacrificially.

Let us examine our hearts and confront any traces of pride that hinder our relationships. May we seek God’s help in cultivating humility and selflessness, valuing others as Christ values us. By doing so, we pave the way for deep, meaningful connections that honor God and bring joy, healing, and strength to those around us.
