Finding Fulfillment in Christ
"Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, 'I am thirsty.' A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, 'It is finished.' With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit." - John 19:28-30
In the final moments before His death on the cross, Jesus uttered the words, "I am thirsty." In response, a sponge soaked in sour wine was lifted to His lips. This act, seemingly simple, carries profound significance, fulfilling the prophecy spoken of in Psalm 69.
Jesus' physical thirst symbolizes the completion of His earthly mission—the fulfillment of God's plan of redemption for humanity. Just as He thirsted for physical refreshment, He also longed to quench the spiritual thirst of all who would believe in Him.
This reminds you and me of the completeness of Christ's sacrifice on the cross. With the words, "It is finished," Jesus declared that the work of redemption was complete. Through His death and resurrection, He has made a way for you to be reconciled to God, to find forgiveness for your sins, and to experience eternal life.
It invites you to respond to His invitation for spiritual refreshment. Just as Jesus offered Himself as the Living Water to satisfy our deepest longings, He invites you to come to Him and drink freely from the wellspring of His grace and love.
It challenges you to live in light of the finished work of Christ. Knowing that Jesus has accomplished everything necessary for your salvation, you can rest in His finished work and live with confidence, knowing that you are secure in His love.
