Giving What You Don't Want to Give

"After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, 'Abraham!' And he said, 'Here I am.' He said, 'Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.'" - Genesis 22:1-2

When we talk about sacrifice, what comes to mind? Perhaps it's giving up something valuable, something precious to us. But let me tell you, sacrifice, according to the Bible, goes much deeper than that. It's about giving what you naturally don't want to give.

One of the most powerful stories of sacrifice in the Bible is found in Genesis 22—the account of Abraham and Isaac. God tested Abraham, not to torment him, but to reveal the depth of his devotion and trust.

Imagine the scene: Abraham, with a heavy heart, obeys God's command to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac. This wasn't just any sacrifice—it was the one thing Abraham held most dear. Yet, he was willing to give it up because of his unwavering faith in God.

As they journeyed to the designated place for sacrifice, Isaac innocently asked his father where the lamb for the burnt offering was. Abraham's response speaks volumes about his trust in God's provision: "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son."

But when they reached the altar, Abraham didn't find a lamb waiting for him. Instead, he found himself faced with the agonizing task of sacrificing his own son. Can you imagine the anguish he must have felt as he raised the knife to obey God's command?

Yet, in that moment of ultimate surrender, God intervened. He stopped Abraham from sacrificing Isaac and provided a ram caught in the thicket as a substitute.

Through this test, God revealed Abraham's unwavering faith and willingness to give what he naturally didn't want to give—his only son. And in doing so, Abraham demonstrated true sacrifice—a sacrifice born out of love, obedience, and trust in God's providence.

So, as you consider the concept of sacrifice today, ask yourself: What am I holding back from God? What is He asking me to give that I find difficult to part with? We can all learn from Abraham's example and trust God enough to give Him our all, even when it hurts the most.
