Membership

"For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others." - Romans 12:3-5

As we continue exploring the secrets of sacrifice, we come to the second flesh hook: Membership. Just as Lordship is essential for presenting ourselves as living sacrifices, understanding our role as members of Christ's body is crucial for remaining on the altar.

In Romans 12:3, Paul admonishes believers not to think of themselves more highly than they ought. He identifies self-centeredness and narcissism as common pitfalls that lead us away from sacrificial living. When we become consumed with our own importance, we lose sight of our true identity and purpose in Christ.

Paul's instruction in verse 4 reminds us of our interconnectedness as members of Christ's body. Each of us has been uniquely gifted by God to fulfill a specific role within the body. Just as a human body consists of many parts, each with its own function, so too are we, as the body of Christ, diverse yet unified. Our individual bodies belong to Christ, and together, we form one body under His headship.

The concept of membership in the body of Christ emphasizes our interdependence and mutual accountability. We belong not only to Christ but also to one another. This perspective challenges us to prioritize community and cooperation over self-interest. As Adrian Rogers aptly put it, "The church is an organism with Jesus Christ as the head." When we recognize our interconnectedness, it compels us to live in harmony and unity, keeping us firmly anchored on the altar of sacrifice.

Just as Lordship calls us to submit to God's authority, Membership reminds us of our responsibility to one another. We are called to serve, support, and encourage one another as we collectively fulfill God's purposes on earth. When we embrace our role as members of Christ's body, we cultivate humility, compassion, and a genuine concern for the well-being of others.

Let's commit to embracing Membership wholeheartedly, knowing that it is a vital component of sacrificial living and pleasing to God.
