Remember Who You Belong To
“You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
“Who am I?” is a question we all ask at some point. The answer comes quickly and powerfully in Scripture: you are—in Christ.
Paul opens his letter to the Ephesians by reminding them of their true identity. “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God’s will: To the faithful saints in Christ Jesus at Ephesus. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:1). Here, Paul emphasizes that they are defined not by their actions or achievements, but by whom they belong to—Christ.
When I was a teenager, every time I’d leave the house, my parents would pull me aside and say, “Jordan… Remember who you belong to!” It was their way of reminding me that my actions and decisions represented more than just myself. I carried the name and reputation of my family. More importantly, as a young man saved by grace, I represented Christ.
This reminder is crucial in understanding our identity in Christ. Paul reiterates this in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: “Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. So glorify God with your body.” This passage underscores that our bodies, our very beings, are not our own. We belong to Christ, bought with His precious sacrifice.
To be “in Christ” means that your identity is rooted in Him. You are not defined by your job, your successes, or your failures. You are defined by your relationship with Jesus. This truth frees you from the pressure of the world’s standards and expectations. Your worth and purpose are secure in Christ’s love and redemption.
Living “in Christ” also means that every aspect of your life is an opportunity to glorify God. Just as my parents urged me to remember who I belonged to, we are called to live in a way that honors Christ. Your decisions, actions, and words should reflect your identity in Him.
So, as you go about your day, remember who you belong to. You are not just your career, your hobbies, or your social status. You are a beloved child of God, bought at a price, and called to live out that identity in every area of your life. Embrace this truth and let it guide you, knowing that in Christ, you are valued, loved, and purposed for His glory.
