You Are Not Your Own

“You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

The word “identity” speaks to how we define ourselves. It’s who you say you are, who you believe you are. But for those of us who are saved, Paul shows us that defining ourselves is no longer our job. If we are in Christ, we don’t belong to ourselves anymore.

Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. We were bought at a price and therefore, our identity is now in Christ. This means that our value and purpose come from Him, not from our achievements, failures, or societal labels.

This transformation in identity is profound. When you accept Christ as your Savior, you are made new. Your old self is gone, and you are given a new, permanent identity that cannot be removed, messed up, taken away, or changed. You belong to Jesus, and He defines who you are.

The Bible speaks of being “in Christ” more than 200 times, and the book of Ephesians especially emphasizes our new identity. In the first 14 verses of Ephesians, Paul mentions being “in Christ” ten times. This repeated emphasis is not by accident. It’s a powerful reminder that our identity is anchored in our relationship with Jesus.

To be “in Christ” means that everything about you is rooted in Him. You are not defined by your job, your successes, or your failures. You are defined by the fact that you belong to Jesus. He has bought you with His blood, and that truth shapes every part of who you are.
In today’s culture, there’s a strong push to define yourself based on personal preferences, feelings, and societal norms. But as believers, we don’t have the privilege of redefining what God has clearly defined in His word. Our identity is set by Him, and it’s a beautiful, unchanging truth.

When you look in the mirror and ask, “Who am I?” remember that you are in Christ. This means you are loved, valued, and purposed by Him. Your identity is secure in His hands. Embrace this truth, and let it guide every aspect of your life. Live in the freedom and security that comes from knowing that you belong to the One who gave everything to save you.
