Adopted Into God’s Family

"He predestined us to be adopted as sons through Jesus Christ for himself, according to the good pleasure of his will." — Ephesians 1:5

The Bible tells us that when we are saved, we immediately become part of the family of God. This adoption into God's family is not something we earn; it happens instantly upon salvation. As children of the King, we receive the same rights as Jesus Himself. In the Roman legal system of the first century, adopted children received all the same legal rights, privileges, and opportunities as natural-born children. They were equal heirs in every way.

One fascinating aspect of Roman law was that when a child was adopted, their old life was completely erased. All previous debts and obligations were wiped clean, giving them a fresh start and a new beginning in their new family. This beautifully illustrates the gospel. When we are adopted by God, our old life is wiped away, and we are given a new identity, a new inheritance, and a new mission.

Being adopted by God means we are not second-rate sons and daughters. We are fully adopted "in Christ," which means we receive all the rights and privileges of Jesus Himself. Ephesians 1:5 tells us that God predestined us to be adopted through Jesus Christ. Before we were born, God knew we would be adopted into His family, giving us a new identity and purpose.

When we are saved, we leave Adam’s family, characterized by sin and death, and join God’s family, characterized by righteousness and life. Our sinful nature is replaced with God’s nature. In Adam’s family, the inheritance is sin and death, but in God’s family, the inheritance is eternal life, joy, and peace in Heaven.

As God's sons and daughters, we have a new Father and Jesus as our big brother. We are co-heirs with Christ, sharing in His mission and purpose. This adoption transforms our lives, giving us a new identity and a mission to reflect God’s love and grace to the world.

Reflect on your adoption into God’s family today. Embrace your new identity and inheritance. Remember, you are not a second-rate child but a beloved son or daughter of the King, called to live out His mission and share His love with others.
