The Transformative Power of Kindness
“God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance.” - Romans 2:4
I’ll never forget my basketball coach, Edgar Fowler. To say he was intense would be an understatement. From the moment he woke up until he went to bed, he yelled and screamed. He cussed like a sailor, and remember, his team was just a group of 8- and 9-year-old boys who only wanted to play basketball.
I watched Coach Fowler pick kids up by their jerseys and pin them against the wall, all while shouting in their faces. It was a nightmare for us kids and drove my dad to the brink. One day, my dad was so fed up that he planned to confront Coach Fowler aggressively. But instead of confronting him with anger, my dad chose to show kindness. He shared the gospel with Coach Fowler, leading him to repentance and faith in Jesus.
The transformation was remarkable. The man who had once been the meanest and angriest person I knew became a completely different person. The cursing, the yelling, and the aggressive behavior vanished. Coach Fowler's life was changed by kindness, and that’s a powerful reminder of what kindness can do.
Romans 2:4 tells us that God’s kindness is meant to lead us to repentance. It’s not just about making us feel good; it’s about changing our lives, turning us away from sin, and bringing us closer to Jesus. Kindness has a divine purpose—it transforms hearts and leads people to salvation.
This same transformative power of kindness is available to you and me. When we show kindness to those around us, whether at work, in our communities, or within our families, we mirror the love and grace of God. We become instruments through which God’s kindness can work to change lives.
Being kind isn’t always easy. Jesus warned us that kindness doesn’t come naturally to us. Romans 3:12 states, “All have turned away; all alike have become worthless. There is no one who does what is good, not even one.” Yet, through the Holy Spirit, we can demonstrate the kind of kindness that mirrors Christ Himself.
Even though it’s challenging, let God’s kindness transform you and shine through you. Your acts of kindness can be a powerful testament to God’s love, capable of changing lives and drawing people to Jesus.
