Rejecting Labels

“But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king's food, or with the wine that he drank.”- Daniel 1:8

When we think about courage, one of the most striking examples comes from the life of Daniel. His journey begins with an unsettling change when the chief eunuch renames him, calling him Belteshazzar instead of Daniel, which means "God is my judge."

This name change wasn't just a rebranding, it was a strategic attempt by the enemy to reshape Daniel’s identity and allegiance. The enemy delights in relabeling God's children, trying to convince them that they are something other than who God created them to be.

The devil whispers lies that can lead you to doubt your true identity. Have you ever felt like you’re not enough, or that your past defines you? The enemy might try to tell you that you’re just a failure, a sinner, or unlovable. But in contrast, Scripture reminds you that you are a child of God, a friend of Jesus, and chosen and holy in His sight.

Despite the pressure to conform, Daniel exhibits immense courage by refusing the king's food and wine. It would have been easy for him to give in to the fear of missing out, to worry about what others might think or the implications of going against the king’s orders.

But Daniel resolved not to defile himself. This bold decision wasn’t just about food, it was a statement of his loyalty to God over man. He recognized that obeying God was far more important than fitting in with the Babylonian culture.

Daniel's courage wasn't merely about standing up against the king; it was about living according to his convictions. He chose to remain true to his identity as a follower of God, even when the world around him encouraged compromise. By standing firm, Daniel not only honored God, but he also demonstrated that true courage often comes from deep-seated faith.

Reflect on your own life today. Think about where you might be feeling pressure to conform or to take the easy route. Are there areas where you need to display courage and hold on to your identity in Christ? Remember that like Daniel, you have the power to reject the labels the world tries to impose on you.

With God as your guide, you can stand firm and choose to follow Him, just as Daniel did. Courage isn’t the absence of fear, it’s the resolve to trust God despite it.
