The Reality of "Soon"

"The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place." – Revelation 1:1

When we read that the things of Revelation "must soon take place," it's easy to get caught up in the idea of time. After all, this was written 2,000 years ago. So why haven’t all these events already occurred? The answer lies in the word "soon" but not in the way we usually think.

In the Greek, the word for "soon" doesn’t refer to a specific timeframe. It's actually tied to the idea of speed or velocity. Imagine the way a tachometer measures speed in a car. It doesn’t tell you how much time has passed but how fast things are moving. When Jesus said these things "must soon take place," He wasn’t saying they’d happen immediately, but rather that when the events start, they will unfold rapidly, in the blink of an eye.

This should challenge us in a personal way. These events are real, and they are coming. The key point is not when they will happen but that when they do, they will happen fast. Jesus gave us the book of Revelation to prepare us, to make sure that we are ready. It’s a warning and an invitation to examine our hearts and lives.

As you read Revelation and reflect on the things that "must soon take place," ask yourself: Am I ready? Are you living in such a way that you are prepared for the return of Jesus and the fulfillment of all things?

The urgency is real. Don’t wait for tomorrow to get right with God or to make changes in your life that He’s calling you to make. The speed at which these things will unfold could take us by surprise. Make today the day you get your heart right with God, take steps toward spiritual growth, and ensure that you are living in a way that reflects His calling on your life.
